Multithreading Comes of Age

چکیده
It is estimated that the aggregate percentage of compute cycles dedicated to digital simulation in the EDA industry, is in excess of 90%. Therefore the remaining analysis, synthesis, layout and data transfer comprise less than 10% of the EDA compute cycles, worldwide. Besides the sheer volume, the other compelling force around the issue of digital simulation is the advancements in process and manufacturing technology (shrinking transistors) that allow and compel ever increasing complexity and integration. This means that there is no end in sight for the volume of circuitry on integrated circuits. This puts the process of digital simulation squarely (and perhaps permanently) behind the eight ball. The demand for more simulation throughput will remain insatiable for years to come.

Improving Latency Tolerance of Multithreading through Decoupling
ÐThe increasing hardware complexity of dynamically scheduled superscalar processors may compromise the scalability of this organization to make an efficient use of future increases in transistor budget. SMT processors, designed over a superscalar core, are therefore directly concerned by this problem. This work presents and evaluates a novel processor microarchitecture which combines two paradi...
متن کاملQuantum Programming for Embedded Systems: Toward a Hassle-Free Multithreading
Even the smallest embedded processor must typically handle a variety of activities and manage multiple devices at the same time. Dealing with the concurrency arising naturally in embedded systems has always been one of the most challenging aspects of embedded systems programming. The time-honored approaches range from simple foreground/background loops (main()+ISR) to RTOS-based preemptive mult...
متن کاملACACES A Decoupled Access/Execute Architecture for Mobile GPUs
Smartphones are emerging as one of the fastest growing markets, providing enhanced capabilities every few months. However, supporting these hardware/software improvements comes at the cost of reducing the operating time per battery charge. The GPU is only left with a shrinking fraction of the power budget, but the trend towards better screens will inevitably lead to a higher demand for improved...
متن کاملModeling the Parallel Execution of Black-Box Services
Services running in a data center frequently rely on RPCs to child services (e.g. storage, cache, authentication), and their latency depends crucially on latencies of those RPCs. However, even though service latency often comes exclusively from the time spent inside remote calls, it is difficult to determine parent latency since multithreading and asynchronous RPCs lead to complex and non-linea...
